vague leadership makes people pay for decisions you were afraid to make.
the goal is “excellence.” the timeline is “soon.” ownership is “the team.” feedback arrives only after somebody has failed a test they did not know they were taking.
that is not flexibility.
it is disrespect.
clarity gives people a fair chance to succeed. it tells them what outcome matters, what authority they hold, where the boundary sits, and how the work will be judged.
without that, people guess.
guessing creates politics because proximity to the leader becomes more valuable than the written standard. the person who can read the mood wins. the person doing exactly what was requested discovers that the request changed in somebody’s head.
leaders sometimes stay vague because clarity creates accountability for them too. once the priority is stated, every new demand can be tested against it. once success is defined, results cannot be rewritten afterward. once ownership is assigned, the leader has to stop reaching into the work whenever anxiety rises.
clarity costs control.
that is why it matters.
be clear about the decision, not only the task. tell people what problem they are solving and which tradeoffs matter. if speed matters more than polish, say it. if a customer promise cannot move, say it. if the person owns the recommendation but you own the final call, say that too.
then ask them to repeat the understanding in their own words. not as a test of obedience. as a test of your explanation.
clear feedback deserves the same discipline. name the behavior, the impact, and the expected change. “be more strategic” helps nobody. explain which decision stayed too narrow, which signal was missed, or which consequence was not considered.
clarity does not require cruelty. direct language can still carry dignity. in fact, false kindness often becomes more painful because it delays the truth until the person has fewer options.
say what is real early enough for action.
people can handle difficult expectations.
what destroys trust is discovering that the real expectation was hidden.
