The title sounds like an invitation to pursue pain. It is not.
Nobody needs to chase adversity. Life has a way of delivering enough of it.
What we can chase is the courage to make a decision when fear, uncertainty, and loss have taken away the illusion of control.
On March 24, 2015, Angelina Jolie Pitt publicly wrote about undergoing preventive surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes. She carried a BRCA1 mutation and had a family history of cancer. After blood-test results raised concern, further testing did not find cancer, but she chose the preventive operation after consulting her doctors.
I was struck by the vulnerability of sharing that decision with the world.
The power of her account was not that it offered one answer for every woman. It did the opposite. It showed that an intensely personal decision can require information, medical guidance, family consideration, and the courage to accept a difficult tradeoff.
That is where adversity becomes revealing.
When life pushes us toward an edge, the question is not whether we can pretend the edge is not there. The question is whether we can face reality without surrendering our agency.
Fear wants certainty before action. Some moments do not offer it.
You gather the facts available. You listen to people qualified to help. You understand the cost of acting and the cost of waiting. Then you make the decision that belongs to you.
That process does not remove pain. It gives pain a direction.
There is also a responsibility in vulnerability. When someone shares a private struggle publicly, the lesson is not that we are entitled to judge the choice. The lesson is that honesty can give another person permission to ask better questions, seek help, and understand that strength does not always look like silence.
Inner pain can be the hardest thing to endure because other people cannot always see it. That invisibility makes compassion essential. We do not know every calculation behind another person's courage. We should be careful about turning somebody else's survival into a slogan.
Being limitless does not mean being invulnerable. It means refusing to let vulnerability erase your ability to choose.
So do not chase adversity. Chase clarity inside it.
Do not glorify the wound. Respect the decision it demands.
Do not wait for fear to disappear. Gather the facts, find the right counsel, protect what matters, and take the next courageous step that is yours to take.
That is how hope becomes action.
